I am writing today because there are a number of concerns I have that I would like to share with you. 1. Economic development: What are the ways the government can support Leamington at a time like this? Tax credits / incentives for tourism in the area. Real estate development for the Baby Boomers who are retiring to the area. Support for cooperative approaches to food production and distribution. 2. Culture and legacy: What pressure can the government bring to bear on Berkshire Hathaway and Brazilian partners to re-consider moving Heinz operations from Leamington, the tomato capital of Canada, to St. Mary’s? Just as we must be certain in the global North to consider culture and legacy before we begin, for example, mining operations in countries like Brazil, we must request the same of the corporations that make decisions affecting us. 3. Consultation: Your trip to Leamington is greatly appreciated and I understand there are many competing priorities for your time. However, strategic and long-term thinking will be powerful in considering what types of economic development will benefit Leamington the most. This can only be done by tapping into the resources available in the area, including brainstorming with local businesses and entrepreneurs/farmers. Many thanks for your consideration.
