Re: Steve Jobs vs Dennis Ritchie, whom both passed this week three years ago. Theres a meme going around making an unfair comparison between the two. Anyone whos studied the art of programming in my day knows who Dennis Ritchie is; we all have well-thumbed copies of K&R on our bookshelves, he didnt just invent C, he established the discipline of programming. Every good programmer organizes their code the same way as Dennis Ritchie. Steve Jobs contribution was not technology itself, but how we use it to enhance our lives. He brought it home, put it in out pockets and made it personal. When we design user experience, we study the master class that is Apple. So, I would not minimize one to honor the other. I would have food on my plate without Steve Jobs contribution, but my work got a lot more exciting when surprise and delight became the new standard. Thank you Dennis Ritchie. Thank you Steve Jobs.
