Read Below: The ROC Education Fund Vision: Empower young leaders through opportunities that build core leadership values of strength, initiative, perseverance, and moral character. Mission:To facilitate transition to post-secondary academic institutions by providing educational scholarships to graduating seniors of outstanding merit at St. Helena Central High School. History: The Real Opportunity for Change Scholarship (ROC) was birthed on February 28, 2014, from a casual phone conversation between lifelong acquaintances, Jamel Dorsey and Myia Knighten. Dorsey and Knighten, both alumni of St. Helena Central High School (SHCH) Class of 2010 and graduating collegiate seniors, discussed the idea of giving back to the school that served a foundational role in the academic and early (burgeoning) career success that they have enjoyed since leaving Hawk land. As natives of rural St. Helena Parish, the ROC founders intimately understood the economic challenges faced by driven youth who possess the desire and ability to acquire a post-secondary education but lack the financial resources needed to make this dream a reality. In lieu of this, Dorsey and Knighten agreed that the most effective way to give back to their beloved high school was through the provision of educational scholarships that would be given to well-deserving graduating seniors. The iconic founding father Benjamin Franklin once quoted, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” Franklin’s maxim underscores the spirit of ROC. ROC exists to function as a metaphorical rock upon which promising young leaders of SHCH can strongly rely on as an aid in accomplishing their highest dreams and aspirations. ROC will help students reach their goals by creating opportunities that equip them with the four core leadership values reflected by our vision: strength, initiative, perseverance, and moral character. Although educational scholarships are crucially important, ROC understands that much more is needed to assist students in the pursuit of their dreams. As such, ROC strongly endeavors to continually expand their offerings to meet the ever-changing needs of today’s youth. Ultimately and above all, ROC is an arm that reaches back to help students of SHCH achieve their dreams. Our singular, chief purpose is to advance their future. Echoing the hearts of founders Dorsey and Knighten, it is our sacred duty to lend our time, talents, and resources to build a strong future for our younger sisters and brothers. Someone did it for us; we must do this for them.
