Oko No Hosomichiwas published posthumously in 1702 and ever since isa ‘must read’ for all the students and lovers of Japanese poetry, being a major text of Classical Japanese literature. Prof. Alvi’s knowledge and understanding of Japanese literature is unmatched in our sub-continent, as he not only had the privilege of teaching Urdu at the Tokyo Universitybut also happens to have the poetic skills to have translated the works of a Classical Haiku Master with such purity and sensitivity.
