Reading the books in the American Girl series gave me a social consciousness as a 7-10 year old that no other book series did. I didnt learn about womans suffrage from Goosebumps. I didnt learn about child labor laws from Animorphs. Or imperialism from Babysitters Club. Reading the American Girl books is easily the only reason I took an interest in History as a kid. The issues of a young girl today are important, but these historical fictions provide a perspective on coming of age that are being lost.
