Readings from the Fathers during Matins. Sermon by St. Leo the Great Sermon 1 on Pentecost. Ch. 1 Lesson vi FOR this is the tenth day since the Lord ascended high above all heavens to sit down at the right hand of God the Father, and it is the fiftieth since his Resurrection, whereon the Lord initiated and made manifest mighty mysteries, binding together the old and new covenants; thereby plainly revealing that grace was foreshadowed by the law, and that the law has been perfected by grace. ++++++++ I am the door, saith the Lord: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall find pasture, alleluia. [Benedictus antiphon, Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost] Let the power of the Holy Spirit come upon us, O Lord, we beseech thee: that he may both mercifully cleanse our hearts, and defend us from all adversities. Through Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord, who with thee in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen. [Collect, Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost] Grant, we beseech thee, merciful God: that thy Church, being gathered together in unity by thy Holy Spirit, may manifest thy power among all peoples, to the glory of thy Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. [APB Collect, Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost] Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you, alleluia. [Magnificat antiphon, Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost] ++++++++ Now that the day light fills the sky, We lift our hearts to God on high, That he, in all we do or say, Will keep us free from harm to-day: Would guard our hearts and tongues from strife; From angers din would hide our life; From all ill sights would turn our eyes; Would close our ears from vanities: Would keep our inmost conscience Pure; Our souls from folly would secure; Would bid us check the pride of sense With due and holy abstinence. So we, when this new day is gone, And night is drawing on, With conscience by the world unstained Shall praise his name for victory gained. To thee who, dead, again dost live, All glory, Lord, thy people give; Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Ghost forevermore. Amen. [Hymn at Prime {Jam lucis orto sidere} (with doxology on Pentecost and throughout the Octave of Pentecost)] ++++++++ The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law. All thy commandments are true: they persecute me falsely; O be thou my help. [Psalm 118[119]:85-86]
