Recap of the last week before Christmas for JH, JV and varsity: Parkview Christian of Yorkville was the opponent Monday, December 15. While the Patriots could not find the hoop in the first half, their defense kept in the game. With HSRC trailing 11-5 at the half, Nate Slager found the range in the third, scoring seven in the period. Caleb Yoder started hitting late in the quarter and stayed hot in he fourth, scoring 13 in that stretch, but didnt get much help on the scoring end as the Patriots went down 34-29. Caleb led in scoring with 13. Nate added 12 and Peter Eizenga scored four. Friday, December 19 we hosted the KTA Eagles. Their elementary team was missing several players, including three starters, and the game reflected that. However, their junior high team was in full force, and we did not stand up well to their size, speed and skill. Tyrus Buckner couldnt get much going inside due to KTAs 64 center, and their 6 guard sliced us up on drives the entire game. Final score was KTA 49, HSRC 20. Steven Zumhagen, Josh McAlister and Tyrus each had four points. Steven also had seven rebounds. Joel Feddes had two assists and Brian Feddes recorded six steals. The JV team evened up their record at 2-2 in their game. After a slow start, the game was tied at thirteen at the half, but the boys went up three going into the fourth, and then nearly doubled their score in the fourth, scoring 19 behind Matt Huizengas three straight threes, and pulled away to a 40-30 victory. Matt led in scoring with 13 while Mason Wilson added eight, Mark Eizenga seven, David Rohn five, Tyrus four and Matt Boland and Owen Sowatzke pitched in two apiece. Matt Boland, who had been the leading scorer for JV to this point, injured his ankle in the game and wont be returning until mid-January. David, possibly the shortest player on the court, led HSRC in rebounding with seven. Mason dished out four assists. He was also one of five players with three steals - Matt Boland, Matt Huizenga, Mark and Tyrus being the others. Varsity fought valiantly against KTAs senior squad but came up just short, 44-41. With Matt Bolands injury, Caleb Yoder fouling out early in the second half and Will Carlson following him to the bench after picking up his fifth in the fourth quarter, the Patriots just didnt have the inside firepower to pull off the comeback victory. Nate Slager found the range from three and the foul line to accumulate his 17 points. Liam Paschen had his best offensive game of the year in adding eight, while Caleb, Will and Mark Eizenga scored four each and Zach Sowatzke and Peter Eizenga each added a basket. Will and Peter had double-digit rebounding games with 11 and 10 respectively, while Nate had four steals. Varsity resumes play at the VCA Invitational on Saturday, tipping off against the hosts at 9:00 AM in Valparaiso. Elementary and junior high have their first games of 2015 on Thursday, January 8 at Christian Hills in Orland Hills and the girls and JV (as well as the varsity) are back in action on Friday, January 9 as we host the Screaming Eagles of Families of Faith Christian Academy at Southwest Christian in Tinley Park.
