*Recent Events on Nauru and Manus Island* The STTARS Board, Management and Staff express their deep sadness and concern for the asylum seekers caught up in recent events on Nauru. We urge the Federal Government to finalise the processing of their visa claims and hand down their decisions as quickly as possible. We also urge the Federal Government to ensure that those asylum seekers who have been charged with offenses as a result of the riots are provided with appropriate legal representation. Finally, we urge the Federal Government to ensure that any actions Australia takes in response to boat arrivals and all other asylum seekers comply with recognised international human rights standards, including: - A fair, transparent and timely assessment of claims. - No long-term, arbitrary or indefinite detention. - The provision of basic facilities such as housing and employment. - Access to health and mental health services to those awaiting a claims outcome. - Additional supports to those identified as vulnerable, including single women, children and young people, and survivors of torture and trauma. - No enforced return or transfer of asylum seekers to situations where they will be endangered. - The reunification of families.
