Recently, AFOSR, U.S. Department of State, Office of the Secretary of Defense (U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)), U.S. Army Research Laboratory, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and the Republic of South Africa Department of Science and Technology organized a technical exchange meeting in Arlington, Va., with the objective of exploring basic research collaborations in the areas of materials science, applied mathematics and physics. The technical exchange was an action item of the US - Republic of South Africa (RSA) Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) Advanced Materials Working Group chaired by AFOSRs Dr. Sofi Bin-Salamon and Dr. Mahlori Mashimbye. AFOSR staff had the opportunity to speak with some of the participants about the significance of the collaborations.
