Recently Lamplighter fourth graders participated in a pendulum lab. As they experimented and collected data, the students discovered that the period (of time) of a pendulums swing increases as the length of the rope increases. “The height of the dropped mass does not change the period,” according to science teacher Bill Burton. The students then each built a robotic pendulum designed to drop the ball by itself by swinging on a rope and releasing a ball at the height of its arc. “Once built, the robots needed to be programmed,” Burton explained. The fourth graders used their lab data to estimate the timing to be used in each robot’s program. From there, Burton described how the students made fine adjustments to their programs to try to drop their ball into a bucket, as shown on this video: https://youtube/watch?v=d17y_odbPak
