Recipe for the winner of the cookie contest. Sugar Cookies Separate 2 eggs. Set aside egg whites. Beat yolks and ½ c. sugar until thick and lemon colored. Set aside. Cream together 1 c. butter and 1 c. sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg whites. Mixture will look curdled. Mix in egg yolk mixture, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. cream of tartar, ½ tsp. ground nutmeg (optional), ¼ tsp. salt and 1 tsp. vanilla. Mix in 3 ½ cups of flour gradually. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours or overnight. Heat oven to 375°. Roll out dough on lightly floured wooden board or between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Cut into desired shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until almost light brown. You may sprinkle with colored sugar before baking or frost and decorate after baking. Frosting Mix together 1 lb. sifted powdered sugar, 4 tsp. soft butter, 1 tsp. vanilla and milk to thin to desired consistency. Separate into smaller amounts if you want different colors of frosting. Decorate as you wish. Don’t make the mistake that I did and use store-bought gel icing if you will be stacking your cookies. (I wanted to decorate my cookies with gold-colored icing, and that was the only form I could find. Next year I will just use yellow icing.) The gel stays sticky. Use this recipe in a decorating bag or a plastic bag with the corner snipped. Marilyn Krueger
