Wiseacre writes in the Herald : An economy exists to serve the needs of society, not the other way around. Governments spend. It is what they do. The real questions are: How do they fund that spending? What do they spend on? Do they tax, to spend on the good of society? Or do they borrow, so they can hand-out corporate welfare to themselves & their cronies? Labour paid down Govt debt, ran nine straight surpluses, and presided over record low unemployment. Labour demonstrated themselves to be fiscally responsible managers of the economy. National have saddled future generations of NZ with billions in debt, while knee-capping our ability to pay the debt back by selling our assets & giving away tax cuts at a time the GFC and years of recession ahead were apparent for all to see. Prudent financial managers they are not. The responsible thing to do is tax & spend for the good of society. Its called *living within our means*. The irresponsible thing to do is cut social services & charge up massive debt, whilst gifting tax cuts to the rich & selling our income producing assets. NZ doesnt have a spending problem. NZ has a revenue problem - because National chooses to pamper the rich at the expense of the poor.
