Recommendation of the Day: I remember when I first stumbled upon with Caladan Brood, before it even appeared on the internet, before even being uploaded and before even having an official date for the full length release, I was approached by one of the members who is a really good friend of mine these days and it was really nice of him to share his project with me since he wanted to hear my feedback. Caladan Brood is probably one of the most wonderful discoveries I’ve made this year and probably in many years it totally stands out from the rest. What a pleasant surprise was to find a similar approach to one of my all time favourite bands Summoning and yes, I’m sure that everyone who will have a chance to surrender their ears to any Caladan Brood tune, they’ll think right away of Summoning, I agree but also, I have to precisely insert here my unquestionable remark that Caladan Brood has a very special touch which takes the Summoning influence to another level. I like the fact that they decided to take Steven Erikson’s creations and represent this universe while executing their songs which are based on the “Malazan Book of the Fallen”. The musicians involved on this project are really great at composing and structuring their songs. The whole progressions of the tracks of the album are magnificent, very epic and totally transcend this barrier that may be created by many fans that may think it’s just a rip off from Summoning. Give it a shot and you’ll be able to hear the very personal features that differ from this previous idea exposed. Many may agree with me and I can’t finish this without saying that, yes it may be not that hard to be able to perform music inspired and/or take parts from diverse tracks from already existing songs from a band that is widely known for their distinctive Epic / Atmospheric compositions such as Summoning, many people do this, many people do covers, etc. but I don’t think many people may realize what Caladan Brood stated with this album, their influence yes but their own personal sound as well which makes a trademark. I think that the term “Epic” is something that symbolizes in its entirety the whole Caladan Brood repertoire and this band, who knows, it may even be an understatement. Each track from “Echoes of Battle” has a very special beauty of their own, within their features and structures you are able to escape and discover such majestic sounds. The atmosphere produced through this whole album is wonderful in truly epic proportions. While listening to Caladan Brood you manage to instantly travel in a very pleasant journey away from this corrupted world towards an epic journey full of mysticism and courageous episodes of adventure. In terms of production, I consider it to be a very clean album, all the instruments sound just perfect in company of the arrangements and the progressions of each track. The guitars, the programmed drums, bass, keyboards, vocals, everything combined produce such a beautiful wave of epic and fascinating ambiance guided by an existing universe, delivering new brilliant captivating passages of musical history to our ears and placing their mark in today’s music existence and in our minds. It’s unbelievable to thin that this is their debut album but it is. At the same time it’s really pleasant knowing that musicians with such characteristics creativity and virtuosity do exist. Definitely one of my favourite albums and I totally recommend it to anyone who is into Epic / Atmospheric Black Metal music. Enjoy ,,/ ~TheCryingOrc
