Record-breaking Albatross census results are in! The data is still being analyzed but the numbers are staggering! Laysan Albatross: 38,307 nests -Thats 17,604 more nests than last years count... it almost doubled! -Previous record high count was 24,323 in 2012 Black-footed Albatross: 3,671 nests -Thats 817 more nests than last years count! -This almost tops the 2011 record high of 3,766. -This species is listed as near threatened, is highly susceptible to climate change and as bycatch of driftnet and long-lining industries: iucnredlist.org/details/22698350/0 Short-tailed Albatross: 1 nest -Thought to be a female-female pair, this couple have had a confirmed nest each year on Kure since 2010. DLNR didnt have a presence during winter months on Kure Atoll before 2010 so most likely theyve been nesting even longer but had gone undocumented.
