Rector job pitches community against poly Category: News Published on Tuesday, 27 August 2013 05:00 Written by Hir Joseph, Lafia Vacancy announcement by the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa in Nasarawa State is generating confusion between the host community and the management, Daily Trust gathered. The community is accusing the manage-ment of plots to scheme out indigenes who have the requisite qualification. They alleged that the advertisement carried recently was skewed to shut out people of the area in favour of non-indigenes who have held sway at the polytechnic since 1981 when the institution was established. Alhaji Umar Sodangi, who is the Jakadan Nasarawa, and chairman of the polytechnic’s Community Relations Committee, told Daily Trust yesterday that members of the host community are not comfortable with the advertisement. Alhaj Umar alleged that the advertisement did not get the approval of the polytechnic’s governing council as provided by the laws establishing it. He also insisted that the seven years stipulated in the advertisement as minimum qualification for years of service for a chief lecturer who wishes to apply, was only aimed at disqualifying indigenes. He added, “Five years is the minimum qualification, not seven. We are deeply worried that the management, in their advertisement relied on a long discarded National Board for Technical Education document which provided that the applicant must not be more than 55 years of age as at the time of assumption of office. The advertisement was skewed with the intent of scheming out indigenes. This is more so as we have discovered that already, the management has targeted and knocked out some indigenes for certain anointed applicants”. Responding, the polytechnic’s spokes-person, Mrs. Tonia James, confirmed that the seven years stipulated in the advertisement was contrary to guidelines, adding, “We are sending an addendum already approved by the registrar to correct that. It is not seven, but five years.” She however denied that the publication was aimed at shutting out indigenes, adding that the council met for one week and gave its approval for the advertisement.
