Red Badge of Courage was such a significant book because it dealt with a young man who deserted his outfit in a moment of fear, and yet he managed to find his way back and was accepted by his peers. It spoke to the reality of war, and fear. Perhaps you dont remember the book, but it spoke eloquently about the fear of battle, and how people who are not heroes sometimes are seen as heroic, simply by circumstances. People who had suffered in battle loved the book and it instantly became a best seller, because it dealt with this honestly. Something to think about with Bowe Bergdahl, as we move forward.
