Red Songbook Theology SB 162 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; Judge-Major Jim McGee So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God. (Revelation 14:19) There are two songs that define the Conflict of the Confederate states of America and the United States of America, and this one sure ain’t Dixie. The writer of the song, Julia Ward Howe wrote it in 1861, and was published in 1862. This is her account of the song, “I awoke in the grey of the morn¬ing, and as I lay wait¬ing for dawn, the long lines of the de¬sired po¬em be¬gan to en¬twine them¬selves in my mind, and I said to my¬self, “I must get up and write these vers¬es, lest I fall asleep and for¬get them!” So I sprang out of bed and in the dim¬ness found an old stump of a pen, which I re¬mem¬bered us¬ing the day be¬fore. I scrawled the vers¬es al-most with¬out look¬ing at the paper.” Julia Howe was a strong believer in women’s rights, abolition of slavery, and world peace. She believed fervently in a greater judgment of the world. Judgment is out of favor now, strangely a strong backing for judgment comes from this source, ““The man who refuses to judge, who neither agrees nor disagrees, who declares that there are no absolutes and believes that he escapes responsibility, is the man responsible for all the blood that is now spilled in the world. Reality is an absolute, existence is an absolute, a speck of dust is an absolute and so is a human life. Whether you live or die is an absolute…There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.” ― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged 1. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on. Chorus Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. 2. I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I have read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps; His day is marching on. 3. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat; O be swift, my soul, to answer him, be jubilant my feet! Our God is marching on. 4. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me; As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, While God is marching on.
