Red-backed Shrike – Rooiruglaksman Lanius collurio S82 Mativuhlungu Loop – Lower Sabie – KNP Sony CyberShot DSC-HX100V, F/5, 1/1000 sec, ISO100 This is a carnivorous passerine bird. They eat large insects, small birds, frogs, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a larder. This practice has earned it the nickname of butcher bird. This bird breeds in most of Europe and western Asia and winters in tropical Africa (southern and east-central Africa). In southern Africa it is common in most areas, excluding the west coast of Namibia and South Africa and large areas of the Kalahari.
