Redwoods football to play season-opener at Siskiyous First-year head coach Chris Vicory and the College of the Redwoods football team will find out how far they’ve come and how far they have to go on Saturday as they travel for their season opener to Siskiyous for a 2 p.m. start. Despite sustaining top-to-bottom changes in terms of coaching staff and player personnel, coach Vicory, his staff and players have wasted little time making excuses. “The fact is we’ve had just as much time to coach these players as anybody else,” said Vicory, who was the offensive coordinator at Mendocino last season before taking over the CR job July 24. “We got a late start as far as recruiting goes, but as far as coaching, I’m actually extremely happy where we are schematically and I fully expect us to compete (Saturday).” The first hurdle for the Corsairs’ 2013 campaign, however, couldn’t be much taller.Redwoods will be facing Siskiyous, which went 9-1 last season and has historically been a challenge for the Corsairs. “Playing a quality opponent right off the bat is going to be tough,” Vicory said. “And when you’re playing good teams like that, mistakes are going to happen. Then it just becomes a matter of how you deal with it.” Heading in to his head coaching debut, coach Vicory’s biggest concern is not the talent level with his group, but the depth, particularly on the offensive and defensive lines, which is an area Siskiyous typically excels. “Siskiyous is a physical, power-run kind of team that has an identity and says, ‘here we are, come stop us,’” Vicory said. “So I’m just anxious to see how we respond. I’m happy with the talent we have, but my concern is in depth and not having enough bodies.” Redwoods will return to the coast for its home-opener next week as the Corsairs host San Jose City College at 1 p.m.
