Refugee Art Project were thrilled to attend the Other Worlds Zine Fair at Central Park in Sydney yesterday. This was organised as an alternative to the Museum of Contemporary Art Zine Fair, over the MCAs links to Transfield -- which provides services to the offshore detention centres of Nauru and Manus Island. We debuted 3 new art zines by asylum seekers and refugees, which included amazing work by women and children from the Villawood detention centre and our art workshops in the Western Sydney area. We also installed a small exhibition of paintings made by Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka within the space. Their work depicts the horrific events of the Sri Lankan war and is a good reminder of why refugees come to Australia seeking protection in the first place. The response to our little books from the public was positive. It was lovely to catch up with our refugee friends in the community, many of whom have work in the zines, which gave them a chance to gauge the public reaction and interact with people. Our thanks go to the Sydney-based zinesters who organised this fair and all of the creatives who took part. It was inspiring to participate in an event that was organised in a spirit of cooperation against the detention industry and the awful treatment of refugees by our government.
