Religion is the opiate of the masses may be one of the most - TopicsExpress

Religion is the opiate of the masses may be one of the most misunderstood quotes of all time. Marx was not mindlessly bashing religion, he was trying to **explain it** with structural analysis. Whenever I see some New Atheist quote it (usually in a self-satisfied way, as if he was the first person to do it), I roll my eyes. There is compassion, empathy and understanding in the quote. There is the demand, by Marx, to eradicate the miserable conditions that give rise to religion, not to eradicate religion itself. I think its very important that Leftists have this understanding. Here is the full quote: Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.
