Renee Patrick and I enjoyed another great Monday evening at Malees Thai Bistro with the usual wonderful audience and hip requests. Including, of course, my most-requested song-- My Attorney Bernie. For those who think that I either wrote the song or was the first to record it, the facts are that it was written by Dave Frishberg in the early 80s, and recorded by Blossom Dearie a few years later. For me, the definitive version is Daves own 1991 recording. I first heard it on late-night WBEZ-Chcago, driving home after a gig, and I was so knocked out by the extreme cleverness of it-- and the great performances-- that I had to pull over! To this day, I still marvel at this song--- and the prolific genius of Dave Frishberg.
