Report on Suicide Prevention; My report on suicide prevention - TopicsExpress

Report on Suicide Prevention; My report on suicide prevention was discussed at the Oireachtas Health Committee on Thursday 13th March; As i hoped, it stimulated quite a debate - the committee spent four hours discussing it. Present were Professor Ella Arensman from the National Suicide Research Foundation, Dr Myra Cullinane, Coroner for Cork, Dr McFeeley and Mr. Paul Malone from the Central Statistics Office, Mr Jerry Raleigh from the National Office for Suicide Prevention, Ciaran Austin from Console, Dominic Layden from Aware, Joan Freedman from Pieta House and Dr Justin Brophy from the Irish association of Suicidology. For the last 2 years I have been holding a series of public consultations with members of the public. What is contained in the paper are the views that I gathered during these meetings. The paper represents the first step in attempting to bring the views of the public into the formal policy making process. We are currently working on a new National Framework to replace the current National Policy on Suicide Prevention - which was known as Reach Out . I intend now to collate the evidence of witnesses at the Health Committee hearing, discuss it with stakeholders and members of the public. I am going to spend the next few months discussing this at a series of Public meetings. If you wish to be involved, please contact me here. In the meantime, you can see a round up of some of the views as reported on RTEs Oireachtas Report here rte.ie/player/ie/show/10262593/ The relevant part starts at 12.05 on the recording
