Reports about a Hamas fighter dressed as an elderly asking for medical treatment, only to through hand grenades at IDF soldiers in the Gaza Strip (IDF soldiers shot and killed him). Pretending to be an uninvolved civilan or a wounded person with the purpose to kill or wound the adversary, is treachery! a violation of the laws of war (international humanitarian law) and a war crime. Such actions harm one of the most important notions in IHL - protected persons (the uninvolved civilian, the wounded etc.) and place them in great danger. Even though such violations do not exempt the IDF from doing anything feasible to minimize the harm to the protected pasrons - feasibility has its limits. (For those who care its articles 23(b) to the 1907 Hague regulations & 37(b) to 1977 Additional Protocl I - both reflect customary IHL).
