Reposting this as it is quite important. I have really not wanted to get into aspects of this that I am seeing but the document below makes it unavoidable now. There is more and more legislation that takes power away from people in democratic nationstates and puts it somewhere...else. Most Europeans have no idea for instance that your EU representative has no power to PASS laws -- he/she can only PROPOSE laws...the actual passing of laws is done by a nontransparent unaccountable unelected body of mostly diplomats; and Brussels now is almost as big a lobbying center as DC. In other words all those democracies with Parliaments....Greece, Spain Portugal etc etc...have a metalayer of legislative power over them that THEIR OWN EU REPRESENTATIVES CANT ULTIMATELY AFFECT. I was dumbfounded when a Portuguese representative to the EU explained this in a public platform we were on in Madeira last year. And then I have asked dozens of Europeans if they know this -- no one does no matter how well-educated...and they are all told all the time that the EU structure is too complicated to understand. It is actually simple: the reps dont have power to pass bills; another secretive group does. Fog of war... - Fog of bureaucracy... I keep seeing blockbuster Hollywood movies in which a terrible shock and awe scenario leaves everything in a state of apocalyptic rubble (that looks just like Gaza now) and then a metanational team just steps in and takes over. I think there is a vast push to overwhelm and deligitimize the sovereignty of the nationstate as an ideal and to globalize suppression of populations wherever it is handy. I am worried Gaza is a lab.
