Representation Update :) September 10 (Wednesday), your Central Student Government attended the monthly University Academic Council meeting from 9am-12nn. Two items in the agenda are raised by your CSG: (1) Wednesday Schedule for 2nd Semester; (2) Art. 3 Sec. 6 of the Magna Carta: Evaluation of Courses Output: (1.) Wednesdays are supposed to be the Student Activity Day of the University. Student Organizations are free to organize and conduct activities every Wednesday (whole day). However, due to shortages of classrooms on a regular class day and other matters (e.g. Part-time teachers schedule), some of the classes are recited during Wednesdays. Most of the laboratories are also conducted on the same day. In order to meet the demand of student organizations to increase participation rate on student-led activities, CSG reminded the Academic Council regarding the Wednesday schedule as the approved Student Activity Day. But in order to help solve, temporarily, some shortages and part-time schedules that will be placed on a Wednesday for 2nd semester, CSG have given considerations and simultaneously proposed the 4:30pm-scheme every Wednesday to the Council. The University Academic Council re-affirmed the university policy that no regular lecture and make-up classes be held after 4:30 PM on Wednesdays. Laboratory classes, however, are exemptions to this rule. THEREFORE, the Academic Council (through the office of the University Registrar) will do its best in making sure that academic activities that will be placed on Wednesdays, by 2nd Semester, WILL NOT GO BEYOND 4:30 PM so that students can freely attend non-academic endeavors. Still, Student Organizations can conduct activities any time during Wednesdays. A memo from the University Academic Vice President regarding this matter will be released soon. :) (2.) The same council appreciated CSG Department of Academic Affairs’ move to assert student stakeholdership in the crafting and formulation of the curriculum, i.e. content courses. The council further suggested that student poll surveys on the curriculum design, instructional methodology, assessment techniques, viable research programs and facilities, and teacher expertise and performance may also be conducted to advance Xavier’s identity as a leading teaching and research university in the ASEAN region. However, these student poll surveys are already in its initial stages through CSG Department of Research and Statistics in cooperation with XU Research and Social Outreach Cluster. Results will be published in appropriate media by the second semester. :) The University Academic Council is the highest academic policy-making body composed of the deans, associate deans, and assistant deans of undergraduate, professional, and graduate colleges and schools in Xavier; the directors of the Office of International Cooperation and Networking (OICN), Quality Management Office (QMO), and the University Libraries; and the President and Secretary for Academic Affairs of XU-Central Student Government. It is convened by the Academic Vice President and is composed of subsidiary committees on Curriculum, Awards and Recognition, Library, E-Learn, and many others. It gathers once a month.
