Representing my country and all wounded and injured veterans by - TopicsExpress

Representing my country and all wounded and injured veterans by competing in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is something that means a lot to me. It is not only for me, but I do it for other veterans who might not have found a new normal. To show them that there is life after disability. Contrary to belief if I make the team I wont become rich and famous, flying around the world talking about how Im some kind of war machine. I will however, continue to talk about my struggles and salvation through sports, maybe someone else will be able to relate and find theirs as well. I am lucky to have the support of a wonderful wife and family who understands these goals. Many in our hometown, as well as all over the country, have blessed us with their support also. My goals and successes do not diminish anyone else accomplishments. There is a lot to be said for someone who works around the clock to provide for their family. It is something that is truly lacking in todays society. What works for you might not be for everyone. Through all of this I also get the pleasure of teaching schoolkids about not only the basics, but also about real life. I have experiences I want to share, but that doesnt mean I am seeking pity. If anything I despise being pitied. I can take my own groceries out, I can carry my own food. I can do everything anyone else can do as long as Im not required to walk completely normal or run. I respect everyone who has served in the military no matter what choices they have made during or since. I am not perfect, as anyone that truly knows me can attest, and I dont hold myself out as some paragon of virtue. I am happy that I found something that completes me. Through competition I am whole. Every time I go to another competition and see a veteran whether for the first time or the tenth time I know, and so do they, that we are not alone. We are going to continue to heal together. Then after a couple of days we go home to work and provide for our families until the next time. - Jaslyn Mcduffee
