Repulsive? You could still make it to Philadelphia! SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT “‘Less Repulsive to the General Reader’: Problems of Audience and Purpose in Early Historical Society Publications” Alea Henle, Western New Mexico University and 2011-2012 MCEAS Mellon EALMT Dissertation Fellow Alea has provided the following abstract of her paper: Early nineteenth-century historical societies printed numerous circulars, pamphlets, periodicals, and volumes as part of their mission to preserve historical materials. Analysis of the works printed between 1820 and 1850 reveals very different ideas of what materials warranted preservation through print. The societies sought to print important facts, documents, papers, and other materials, preferably those with popular appeal—but contemporaneous critiques highlighted the publications shortcomings. The processes of preparing publications, considering audiences, exchanging and critiquing works with other societies, and responding to potentially competing publications, led the societies to slowly expand ideas of what constituted materials for history. Friday, 1 November 2013 3:00-5:00 p.m. Library Company of Philadelphia, 1314 Locust Street Everyone attending the seminar should read the paper in advance. Seminar papers can be downloaded in our password protected website. The site is located at: mceas.org/friday To enter the site, you need to contact Amy Baxter-Bellamy .
