Rescue fact: John and I will be celebrating our 11th year - TopicsExpress

Rescue fact: John and I will be celebrating our 11th year together this year (jan 01, 2015) and since that time, weve rescued over 120 sled dogs (Alaskan huskies) from various situations - 1/2 of these dogs came to us --the other half, we found at Alaskan shelters & on the road..weve placed about 3/4 with appropriate mushers and or the right family and home situation. These rescues are all good dogs. They all just needed time, training, patience and love. They dont know they are rescues & we treat them equal to our own, welcoming them into our kennel family and training them with a program that works for that individual dogs needs. We understand that every dog is unique. No fancy tricks, just letting the dog be a dog with a new lease on life. We give that dog a strong foundation that will eventually lead him/her back to his original self & purpose. Theres no physical discipline ever, we do everything with our voice and we make a real conscious effort to always be consistent with that dog.. Over time..... Our own racing team bloodline from the last decade has come out of some rescues that had proven perigees. (Zoya- from the sailor line) ..she was a dog who ran ONAC and after a few seasons was almost put down because she had been sick. We got her in 2004. She finished the Quest in 2005 and became a mother the next year. Her daughter, Robin would give us 5 small litters in 5 years and those dogs would now serve to be the core of this kennel. Robins father..Tokyo, another rescue from 2004, He was aggressive and his owners couldnt handle his strength. Those two were quite the duo and we are so fortunate to have had them in our life. Each dog touches us all in a different way. They become more than just a dog in team, they become our good friends & close trail companions. People always ask..where do these dogs come from? How do you find these animals? Heres a few examples: Previous owner cant afford to keep dog due to finances, newly divorce owner needs to rehome dog ASAP, people are moving, dog was aggressive and had run out of options elsewhere, dog wasnt performing at the level needed in his previous team.. We never ever pass judgement on the people or situations they come from, its not our place to do that.. were interested in helping where we can when situations arise. Were very good, both John and I at looking at these dogs and seeing what they need pretty quickly. We dont ever place dogs until they are ready and we then take time finding the appropriate setting where that dog will shine..example would be..in a race kennel vs recreational kennel. Or home situation with a big n comfy couch. So when you think Rescues...please dont think, aw poor little dog.. think..alright, Go, dog! Go! Most of these dogs are young (14 months to 4) and are high performing race athletes. We let the dog tell us where he wants to be and if he wants to stay because he fits into this kennel, hell stay..if he belongs in a different team, we will find that team. Its hard to let them go because we care about them all but to remain effective we understand we have to be selfless and do whats best for that animal. I believe that attitude is everything and its important to have a good one if you want to make a change. Happy trails, -zoya
