Resumes 101 The Resume leaves the first impression to a potential employer. How does your look? There are many factors to look at when you are preparing your resume. Here are a few basic things to take into consideration when writing your resume! 1. Target your resume – your resume should almost mirror the advertisement/job you are applying for. Review the skills required for the position and ensure that they are on your resume. Don’t lie to get the job but make sure that your skills and abilities are fully represented! 2. Know your audience – choose the style of resume wisely. Some careers demand a chronological resume; whole other careers want to know what you have done in each job with the addition of your other skills. There are 3 types of resumes: chronological, functional, combination 3. Make sure your info is correct – your contact info is one of the most important pieces on your resume. If you aren’t getting any responses, check that your info is correct. 4. Spelling – your spelling should ALWAYS be checked by someone else. I have seen excellent resumes with spelling mistakes and a spelling mistake might be the difference between an interview and the recycling bin. 5. Easy to Read – make your resume easy to read. Choose the correct font, nothing fancy. Use bullets to highlight your skills. Make sure that your resume doesn’t exceed 2 pages but 1 page is ideal as this is a marketing tool to get you an interview, nothing else! 6. Wording – your wording must include action verbs (check action verbs online for a great list). Use your accomplishments and show what they have led to. Use any statistics on your accomplishments; quantify and qualify your accomplishments. Make sure that you use keywords and industry words. Be sure not to use too many cliché words. 7. Format – create a format that creates a balanced white space and that makes the potential employers want to start to read it. If you are not sure of how to format, seek professional assistance as a good professional can format a resume in minutes. 8. Reflection of who you are – let your resume be a reflection of who you really are. If it doesn’t sound like you, don’t put it on. Remember this is a first impression of you and you have probably 7 – 20 seconds to capture a potential employer’s attention. Do they read on or not. Following these tips will make sure that your resume reaches a greater audience.
