Review: Beauty and The Beast @ The Lowry Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to The Lowry with a rare opportunity to see David Bintley’s fabulous production of the classic fairy-tale Beauty and the Beast, last seen there a decade ago. Bintley, BRB’s director, is widely recognised as one of our country’s finest choreographers and this powerful, gothic adaptation comes from the creator of previous successes Far From The Madding Crowd, Edward 11, Aladdin and The Prince of the Pagodas to name but a few. Philip Prowse’s magnificent, storybook sets incorporate gloomy forests and a vast castle Bintley’s woven some delightful new twists into this timeless fable and it’s improved both in strength of story-telling and pace since I first saw it eleven years ago in 2003 when it premiered at BRB’s home in Birmingham. Wisely the story remains true to the original fairy-tale so the beautiful Belle is forced to live with the hideous Beast so that her father may go free. Their initial relationship may appear a bit scary for little ones, but ultimately it’s beautifully realised as together they find forgiveness, absolution and true love told through a series of beautiful pas de deux.
