Review Mode : The Babadook (2014) here we have a horror that has absolutly NO idea what it wants to be..at times it feels like Its going in a completely original path only to wind up falling victom to many of the genres cliche like posession (The Shining,The Excorcist). However were it falls short of any real terror (in my oppinion) it makes up for in pacing,story telling,mystery,realistic acting & the occasional chill or two..Mister Babadook comes knocking..Dook Dook Dook..in a way it pays homage to many greats before it such as the idea of Mr.Babadook being able to manifest from a book & grows stronger based on the readers fear..rather then a dream (Nightmare on elm st.) Young samuel cannot sleep at home..& is being disobedient in school. Constantly telling his mother & everyone else around him that The Babaook will kill them..naturally this makes sam and his mother amelia out casts from the local school all the way down to there own relatives. Eventually the babadook slowly (very very slowly) reveals itself & its motives to amelia..via its book. Slowly but surely falling under possession from the fictional childrens book character amelia goes all jack nicholson on us & tries to kill her son after snapping there dogs neck. One great scene sends a nod to the home alone series which shows samuel besting his possessed mother in the house with all soughts of traps that would make the series creators proud. However..This movie borrows many ideas and gets most of them right..but missed out one vital element. The scares. Not Once did i truly feel the Awe in shock form. And though the ending might turn people away..i rather liked it. I Found it interesting. Sets up a sequel which in all fairness i cant see delivering the goods either...guess well have to wait & see. A Rare miss from Kristian Lee who usually guides me onto the cult classic. This has appeal but ultimately..A Good film it may be..I Came to get scared...& that..didnt..happen.
