Review | The Grim Tower | 7,5/10 (EN) Tears of Martyr are a symphonic gothic metal band quite comparable to Nightwish or Theatre Of Tragedy. The frontwoman has a style that elicits legendary Nightwish vocalist, Tarja Turunnen and that’s noticeable from the very beginning. Just like early Lacuna Coil and current Epica, male growls are also used on the album – but I will say that it’s quite sparingly. For the most part, this is a band heavily inspired by the catchy choruses of Nighwish and maybe their sense of pomp and majesty, but definitely not their vivacious instrumental sections. The band seem to be more worried about getting right to the point and that should prove a major point of market for them. “Golem 4:25″ for example, features triumphant Arabian influenced synths as a holder between choruses, as once again – it’s all about the pomp and the choruses here. Throughout the ten tracks (one of which is an instrumental outro) I have noticed a style that plays similarly to Nightwish’s Wishmaster or Oceanborn releases, but not quite as good or polished. I’m not saying that the band don’t have potential, as is certainly shown with album highlight “Of Raven Born 4:21.” These guys are definitely trying to capture the spirit of Nightwish at their best, but I just don’t think the effort comes off quite as potent as the mesmerism of everything that Nightwish embodies. It’s not that you won’t find some noteworthy moments on the disc, but that you haven’t heard anything here that hasn’t already been done before and to a much grander extent. In time I feel that the band will gain more experience and perhaps be able to differentiate from their influences, but for now… it’s nothing really more than Nightwish lite. And I’m not currently on a diet. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended for fans of symphonic gothic metal in the vein of Nightwish, Theatre Of Tragedy, Epica and others. If you’re a fiend for those bands, then you’re going to soak this one up heavily… you’ll fall head over heels for it! Highlights: Golem, Vampires Of Sunset Street, Lost Boys, Of Raven Born, Wolves And A Witch (10 Tracks, 43:00) 7.5/10
