Richard Ford talks about the importance of houses in his life. They are so important to me, too. Frannys house in COUNTDOWN is the house I lived in, in Camp Springs, Maryland. The Aurora County novels all take place (in my mind) in my grandmothers house in Mississippi -- so does FREEDOM SUMMER. It took me a long time to find Sunnys house in REVOLUTION... the first house Ive written about that I didnt actually live in, but that captured my imagination in such a vivid way when I found it, in Greenwood, Mississippi. Ford: For me, houses have almost iconic status. Ive lived in lots of houses; Ive owned a few houses; I love looking at houses because its shelter. ... A house is where you look out the window and see the world. A house is where youll die; a house is where youll get divorced. A house is where youll have your most sacred and most profane experiences. Houses for me are critical to my experience and I guess I thought critical to many Americans experiences. The NPR piece is here:
