Robert James Patterson Im not a racist but... Sure you are. You just changed your clothes. In 2015, racists with white hoods and swastikas, while theyre still out there, are marginalized and shunned by most of polite society. As one of todays modern racist, you might wear a suit and talk about urban thugs instead of using the N word... yet when you speak, that word still rings in our ears. Instead of burning crosses in yards you cut funding for schools in poor neighborhoods and advocate mandatory drug testing for welfare recipients. Instead of demanding separate drinking fountains you warn in solemn tones of immigrant children carrying Ebola and sent by Muslims to infect and destroy America. You dont scream and curse at black children attending white schools any more- just try to take away their school lunch to improve their work ethic and keep college unaffordable. Sure you dont make folks sit in the back of the bus today- but you refuse to pay them a living wage, all in the name of freedom and liberty. You dont refuse to sit in the same restaurant as black people- just wonder about the Presidents birth certificate, say that he doesnt have American values and accuse him of flashing gang signs. Of course you dont keep black people as slaves any more- but you trivialize slavery itself by comparing it to everything from health insurance to food stamps, and remind us that after all, slaves DID get free room and board, so how bad could it have been? You dont lynch them in the dark- just cheer when the police shoot them down in broad daylight for criminal activity like resisting arrest or making a threatening gesture like reaching for a cell phone. And you see every act of violence or stupidity or even petty theft by a minority as evidence of the inferior values of the entire race- yet every white criminal is just an aberrant lone wolf. You may have changed your words, but not your meaning. So please- keep your Im not a racist excuses to yourself. You can dress yourself up any way you like- call yourself a pro-life trickle-down flat-tax tough-love common-sense boot-straps sovereign-citizen Republican or whatever other disguise you choose... but a racist by any name has the same disgusting smell. Its the smell of hate and entitlement, and it gives you away every time.
