Robin Williams death is very tragic and the world has lost a great comedian and actor. But I find it more tragic that men and women suffer from these same problems (depression, substance abuse, mental health, and suicidal tendencies) everyday all over the country but their problems, lives and contributions to this world go unnoticed by many. We as a society are so fixated on celebrities and their lavish lifestyles that their problems and addictions are considered tragedies and we are sympathetic to the misfortunes of these superheroes. However, when we come across the homeless man, who suffers from the same problems as Robin Williams, sitting on the sidewalk at the corner store, we are distrustful and judgemental instead of compassionate. He asks for change and we become defensive and self righteous. If he told us a joke and made us laugh, would we have more compassion? If Robin Williams were that homeless man would the news and everyone in America post R.I.P on their fb page? We are very caring and understanding when someones problems do not affect us personally. We hear of news like this and we are quick to express our condolences and prayers. But quick to refuse any assistance to that homeless guy because he will probably just buy beer with it. What if that man only wants change to use the pay phone to call his family and see if anyone still cares before he ends his life? I hope Robin Williams death will have as much of a positive impact as his life did. He brought laughter to others even though he was dying inside. His truly were tears of a clown. The next time we think of celebrities and how their life must be so wonderful and trouble free, let us remember Robin Williams who has shown us celebrities are not super humans and they suffer the same demons as all of us. The next time you see a homeless guy give him some change because hes no different than a celebrity on the inside. He may even be greater than a celebrity, he may be a war vet.
