Robots, drones, steam-powered cars, elephant toothpaste and Ethiopian bread beer will be on show at Wits University during National Science Week from 4 – 9 August 2014. The Cutting Edge Science and Technology Expo will again take place daily from 09:00 to 15:30 (Monday to Friday) on the Senate House Concourse, Braamfontein East Campus. Loads of prizes are also up for grabs during the Science Slam Dunk Show – where Wits scientists and students will show off their research in short, fun and entertaining presentations – that will take place daily (Monday to Friday) between 11:00 and 12:00 in the Wits Theatre, Braamfontein Campus East. Enquiries: [email protected] Evening public lectures: Tuesday, 5 August 2014 at 17:30 for 18:00 in the Wits Theatre, Braamfontein Campus East: Talk 1: Professor Lyn Wadley from the Evolutionary Studies Institute will deliver a talk titled: Africa: Cradle of human thought, art and technology. Talk 2: Dr Manuel Fernandez from the School of Chemistry will deliver a talk titled: Gazing into the crystal ball: Crystallography at 100. The sub-theme for this year’s NSW is International Year of Crystallography. Thursday, 7 August 2014 at 17:30 for 18:00 in the Wits Theatre, Braamfontein Campus East: Dr Andreas Faltenbacher and Sashin Moonsamy from the School of Physics will present a talk titled: The new astronomy and the search for life beyond Earth.
