Rolling Thunder, Inc. Alabama Chapter 1 NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 2013 National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony MONTGOMERY - A ceremony to commemorate National POW/MIA Recognition Day will be held on the south lawn of State Capitol beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 21. The ceremony will include remarks by former Korean War Veteran Newton Duke of Alabaster, patriotic music, the raising of the POW/MIA flag, wreath laying ceremony and the playing of Taps. On May 18, 1951, Duke along with about 29 other soldiers became prisoners of war. He remained a captive behind enemy lines until Aug. 13, 1953. The day’s events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a motorcycle POW/MIA Honor Ride from Cramton Bowl to the State Capitol. A POW/MIA exhibit by Rolling Thunder, Inc. Alabama Chapter 1, will be on display for public viewing inside the State Capitol. Other activities will include: A book signing by former WWII POW Sy Lichtenfeld; Blue Star Salute Foundation display, “Faces of the Price of Freedom”; Buffalo Soldiers, 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association, Inc. display, and more. Traditionally held on the third Friday in September, the ceremony was moved to Saturday to accommodate and encourage public attendance. The observance is one of six days of the year that Congress has mandated flying of the POW/MIA flag at federal buildings. In 2008, state legislation was passed that allows for the POW/MIA flag to be flown at state buildings in Alabama.
