Ronnie Van Zant was the original leader of the country rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, named after the groups disliked gym teacher, Leonard Skinner. The group was originally called My Backyard and was best know for their hits Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird. Van Zant died in a plane crash on October 20, 1977 near Gillsburg, Mississippi, after the pilot accidentally dumped his fuel. Ronnie was only 28. Band members Steve Gaines (guitar) and his sister Cassie (vocals) also perished in the crash. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
