Rose Milestein – From Homeless to being - Vallejo’s First Women Police Office (Matron) Badge 126 Rose, born in Bucharest in 1899. Her family fled Bucharest migrating to Winnipeg, Canada. After her mother died, leaving Rose alone, she was put into a foster home. It was then Milestein first came across the Salvation Army. She became a Missionary in Hawaii, where she married and had a daughter Joanne. Her marriage failed, she and her daughter came back to US, arriving in Vallejo without funds in 1937. They were homeless. She was taken in by two on duty officers, that she lived with as family for years. She found work and volunteered at the Salvation Army. She took out her citizenship papers in 1939. During World War II Milestein worked as a ship fitter on Mare Island. Toward the end of the war Rose took the Civil Service Exam for the position of Police Matron for the City of Vallejo and was hired in 1944. Milestein walked the dangerous downtown streets as a Police Officer 20 years and volunteered for the Salvation Army for a total of 40 years, helping young girls, boys and families that needed counseling, life planning, and finding suitable lodging. She also helped young unwed women awaiting the birth of babies at Booth Memorial Home for unwed mothers, ran by the Salvation Army. Rose Milestein received various awards and was held in high esteem by the City of Vallejo. Milestein retired in 1965 and died May 2, 1969 in Los Angeles.
