Rotinonhsón:ni "PEOPLE OF THE LONGHOUSE" As we stated in our welcome message, the Longhouse is a way of life. We have created this section in order to share the knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Despite our best efforts to provide complete explanations here on the website, one must participate and embrace life as a Rotinonhsón:ni in order to have a full appreciation and understanding of who we are. No element of Longhouse life stands apart from the other, we exist in a continuous cycle, exchanging knowledge and energy with all of creation. Roles of the People of the Longhouse We have created this section and subpages to explain the general roles filled by the people within the Longhouse. As we state throughout our documents and web pages, the Longhouse is a way of life and you must walk this path and actively participate in order to get a full understanding and appreciation of who we are. We have provided general explanations of the roles but have intentionally left out certain details so as not to provide information or instruction for things that need only be performed within the Longhouse. These summaries should however be sufficient enough to give the reader a general understanding of the life of Kanien’kehaka (People of the Flint/Spark) and the Rotinonhsón:ni (People of the Longhouse). We have provided this document and all related documents as a learning tool for anyone who wishes to learn more about the lives of the people who have embraced a life based on the Great Law of Peace from the past Two Thousand years to the present. As we evolve as a people we may change, edit or add to our documents and information. It is important to stipulate that we are listing all the traditional, ideal roles of the Kanien’kehaka people who have lived and still live by the Great Law of Peace. In some cases these roles have become difficult over time because of the current state of the Nation, Confederacy, and world that we live in today. But with others, such as the Ceremonies, the traditions remain vibrantly alive. We are currently reinstituting and rediscovering traditional practices to reclaim our complete identity.
