Rowdy breaks into girls home, tries to rape her TNN | Jul 16, 2014, 03.10AM IST KOLKATA: A local rowdy molested an 18-year-old student on a busy road in Tangra on Monday night and followed her home to try and rape her after she escaped his clutches the first time. The accused, Md Ali, is said to be a Trinamool Congress supporter. He barged into the girls house by breaking down her door on Tuesday morning and kicked her viciously in the stomach when she continued to fight back. The girl was severely injured in the attack and lost a lot of blood by the time she was taken to hospital. Coming close on the heels of back-to-back molestations of women by cabbies, the Tangra assault indicates just how dangerous things are getting in Kolkata and its adjoining areas. The 18-year-old girls ordeal started on Monday evening when she was returning home after going tuition. Ali was loitering the streets drunk when he spotted her. She says he grabbed her by the hand and tried to drag her towards a dark stretch. It was around 10.30pm. That is usually the time I return home. Md Ali and some of his friends occasionally sit at a roadside tea stall, making catcalls and indecent gestures at girls passing by. When he held my hand, I pushed him. Since he was drunk, he fell on the ground. I took this opportunity and ran home and told my brothers everything about it, the survivor said on Tuesday. But no one in her family expected the revenge assault. My sister stays in a room that is connected to the main building with a balcony. Around 4am, we suddenly woke up to her screams. We rushed out to find the door broken and two youths - Md Ali and Sakre Ali - inside her room trying to do force themselves on her. When we challenged them, they kicked her in the lower abdomen and fled. We couldnt chase them because our sister was writhing in pain on the ground, her brother, who is a human rights worker, told TOI. The girl was taken to NRS Hospital. She was bleeding profusely but the doctors didnt want to treat her as it was a police case. So we had to take her to Tangra police station, file a complaint and then take her back for the treatment to start, he added. Police say they have detained a suspect. Locals say that some ruffians prowl the area opposite the old slaughter house in Tangra at night. They are Trinamool supporters and enjoy support of some local leaders. After 9pm, this place turns into a hell. Roads are frequented by drunkards and goons and it has become really risky for women and girls to step out of their houses, a local youth said. When asked about the spurt in crimes against women, writer Suchitra Bhattacharyay said, It has become a regular event and in most cases I find it is either done by people with political connections or by a section of youths who are rich. Women are shown everywhere as something that is easily available. This is unfortunate but the most unfortunate part is the total lapse of security. There is not a single place in the city where a woman is safe.
