I was thinking about Mel Tormés The Christmas Song Chestnuts roasting on a open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sung by a _ and couldnt think of the next word. It could be fire. One might sing by a fire. But I couldnt imagine Mel Tormé rhyming fire with itself. It finally occurred to me that the word is choir. Why is that interesting? Because until you know that word, you dont know what by means. Does by refer to where the carols were being sung or by whom? These are completely different meanings of the word. So this is an interesting ambiguity the little word by must bear. Its said that one of the most difficult things about English to non-native speakers is prepositions.
