Russia will oppose any attempt to impose a no-fly zone over Syria, foreign office spokesman Alexander Lukashevich has vowed. He quoted the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as describing all no-fly and buffer zone proposals as a clear sign of “disrespect towards international law.” Mr. Lukashevich cited the case of Libya as an example of such ill-conceived decisions, adding Russia would do anything in its power to prevent the Libyan scenario from being played out in Syria. This announcement came after several countries pushed for establishing a no-fly zone over the war-torn country to allegedly stop President Assad’s army from carrying out air strikes against Syrian rebels. France pointed out however only the UN Security Council could make this decision, although the chance for it to be taken is slim since it would require unanimous support of all UN member states.
