Russian stealth jet technology surpassed by China: Global Times wantchinatimes/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20141221000028&cid=1101 俄羅斯隱形飛機技術由中國超越:環球時報 Chinas stealth fighter technology has overtaken Russia based on newly-released photos of Chinas J-20 stealth fighter, reports the Global Times, a tabloid under the auspices of the Communist Party mouthpiece Peoples Daily. Photos of the latest version of the J-20 — a stealth, twin-engine fifth-generation fighter jet being developed by the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation — bearing the serial number 2015, reveal that the aircraft has commenced ground testing and may be conducting its first flight soon. This appears to be another step in the right direction after an earlier J-20 model with a serial number of 2013 was unveiled in September, the Global Times said. Experts speculate that the J-20 may have already entered a rapid prototype production phase. It remains to be seen whether the J-20 model, which carried out its maiden flight in January 2011, can catch up to Russias T-50 fifth-generation fighter, which conducted its maiden flight a year earlier. news.want-daily/ClipPg/Default.aspx?day=20141221&page=N09AA9 news.want-daily/ClipPg/Default.aspx?day=20141221&page=N15AB1 Breakthrough in US-Cuba ties good for everyone, including China wantchinatimes/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20141221000027&cid=1202 The planned reestablishment of ties between the US and Cuba comes as a result of both countries beginning reevaluating their positions and coming to better terms with one another, Xu Shicheng, a Chinese expert on Cuban affairs at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told China Business News. In a surprise move, the US president Barack Obama announced on Dec. 17 that the US and Cuba will begin to normalize relations. Commenting on the breakthrough, Xu–a fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences–said it was a result of continuing efforts from both countries to mend their relationship. Since Raul Castro took over from his brother Fidel in 2008 as the president of Cuba, he began a series of reforms and has reiterated his desire to hold talks with leaders from the US. Last December, Castro and Obama shook hands with each other at the funeral of former South African president Nelson Mandela. Another example of improving relations was the two nations cooperation earlier this year in fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. For Obama, a good December, but hard choices lie ahead washingtonpost/politics/for-obama-a-good-december-but-hard-choices-lie-ahead/2014/12/20/d6b6484c-8860-11e4-b9b7-b8632ae73d25_story.html President Obama left Washington on Friday for a lengthy holiday vacation in Hawaii, as if the beating he and the Democrats absorbed last month was of no particular consequence to him. Life could be different when he returns in January. Obama closed out the year with a news conference performance that gave no hint that he was suffering from the Republican takeover of the Senate, its expanded majority in the House and its continuing march to power in the states.
