Ruto to sue 5 Cord MPs for land scam remarks DEPUTY President William Ruto has given five Cord MPs seven days to retract a statement linking him to the Karen land saga. Otherwise he will sue them, he said. Ruto is also demanding that the Cord leaders admit liability for libel in seven days. In a letter dated October 23 written by his lawyer Kioko Kilukumi, the Deputy President said the media statement was “offensive and defamatory” and he has no knowledge of the ownership of the land. The letter says Ruto does not own any parcel of the land in question and is not involved in any way with the disputed land. In a press conference on October 16, some Cord leaders said Ruto is among senior government officials involved in the 134 acres Karen land scam. Senators Johnstone Muthama (Machakos), James Orengo (Siaya) and Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega) and Elizabeth Ongoro (nominated) and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed were at the press briefing. Ruto said the statement was designed so that the public sees him as a “land grabber and corrupt with an insatiable appetite for public land”. He demanded the Cord leaders apologise in a press conference as they made the remarks at a similar event. The Deputy President says the statement was given extensive coverage by media and circulated worldwide over the internet and social media, and as a result has “soiled, tarnished and maligned” his name and reputation. “He has been exposed to hatred, ridicule, contempt, humiliation, agony and odium and as a result been injured and continues to be injured in his career as a politician and in performance of his duties as the Deputy President,” the letter reads. -
