Ryman History: Short run down...Anybody can add or correct me if Im wrong just from what I remember. We all know Rymans are not for everyone. I have heard them called all types of names etc. From the ones I have raised they did what I asked them to do. They hunted close, working Grouse and Woodcock in the same coverts that George Bird Evans hunted in ( Old Hemlock). They were used as my guide dogs in WV along with a few Llewellins. Ryman was from Pa and wanted a great looking dog that could hunt so he did many crosses till he produced what he wanted many of his crosses were with Bench Setters and Llewellins. I think it is stated one of what he considered his best crosses was with a dog named Sports Peerless. We have to remember when people want to knock a Ryman for certain things they were bred in a area for close working gun dogs...Yes they may not have that Poker tail or cast 500 yards...Although I can say just about everyone I ever hunted with were bird hunting machines at finding grouse and how they did it so methodical is amazing to watch owning these setters have always been a joy for me and my son to watch them work. There is tons more to add to this as time goes on. The tri female is what I like a Ryman size to be around 45 to 48 lbs.
