SA Daily Report - In rescuing animals, there is happy times and sad times. There are times when you feel like you’re beating your head against a wall and times when you feel like it’s all worthwhile and you are really making a difference. Well, in this instance, it is the later. About 6 weeks ago, I went and picked up a little girl from the shelter, she had been a stray for 2-3 years and it took the animal control officer awhile to catch her. She’s small, most probably a chiweenie. I like a challenge, and she is definitely that. She was terrified of people, didn’t bite, but was just mortified. The first time I picked her up, she tinkled all over my feet. I put her in a carrier and took her home. Got home, picked up the carrier from the back seat, and the bottom of it promptly came off, leaving her loose and off she went. I followed her all over the neighborhood but she wouldn’t let me get close. Steve put out a live trap and that’s how we finally got her 3 days later. She hung around, I like to think she wanted to be there. Well, after we got her back, in the house she went immediately. Right at first, she just trembled whenever either of us tried to talk to her or have any kind of interaction with her. She wouldn’t look us in the eye. The first sign she was coming around was hearing her tail wag and hit the wall when we walked in the room. Then she’d make eye contact. I learned where she didn’t want to be touched and that she likes to be held and snuggle up against me. It’s been gradual but we’re getting there. Sunday, I bit the bullet and trimmed her toenails and gave her a bath. She did great. The thing that really made my day yesterday was that I was petting her and talking to her, I always talk and talk and talk to her about whatever, softly and fairly quietly. I was rewarded, I got several kisses from her. I just wanted to grab her up and hug her, but I didn’t, I didn’t want to startle her. It makes me feel so good to make a difference in her life. Because of her wandering ways, her name is Gypsy Rose. I don’t know what happened to her to make her so scared of people, but I have promised her that she’s safe from here on out. I don’t know if she’ll ever be comfortable enough around people to leave our house, but we’ll take it one day at a time and see where we go.
