SANTA CLARA AQUAMAIDS SNATCH SILVER FROM MEXICOS NATIONAL TEAM AT US OPEN SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS! Henderson, Nevada (July 19, 2014) — 2 Junior teams (15-18 age group) consisting of 14 members of the Santa Clara Aquamaids synchronized swimming team competed at the 2014 U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships from July 15-July 19 in Henderson, Nevada. More than 150 athletes ages 15 and up from ten different countries including Japan, Italy, Canada, Mexico, and Peru competed in this event. The team routine of Elle Billman, Phoebe Coffin, Danielle Emma, Katie Gu, Karen Li, Alexandra Meredith-Le Roux, Stephanie Thielemann, and Amanda Urke had a spectacular finish. They brought home the silver medal placing right behind the U.S.A. Junior National Team and coming ahead of Mexico’s National Team. U.S.A.’s Junior National Team is made up of the top twelve ranking juniors in the U.S.A. Three Aquamaids, Claire Barton, Bela Malcomson, and Karensa Tjoa, are on this team. Another Aquamaids team consisting of Michelle Roysental, Masha Garin, Emily Lu, Nicola Schmidt, Callia Tong, and Sabrina Walsh earned 4th place in the same Junior age group. The Santa Clara Aquamaids also received a silver medal in the newest event in synchronized swimming, the combination team. The combination team consists of: Elle Billman, Phoebe Coffin, Danielle Emma, Katie Gu, Karen Li, Alexandra Meredith-Le Roux, Michelle Roysental, Nicola Schmidt, Stephanie Thielemann, and Amanda Urke. UANA is a competition, which features the countries of the Americas. The Comen Cup is a highly prestigious competition that includes the top European teams. Santa Clara Aquamaids was founded 50 years ago in 1964, so this year marks the 50th anniversary of the club. SCA has a rich history and copious contribution to the sport. Through generations of exceptional athletes and coaches, SCA has become the most decorated synchronized swimming club in the world. Head Coach, Chris Carver, who is a former coach of three U.S. Olympic teams, which won gold and bronze medals from Atlanta to Athens, leads Santa Clara’s accomplished coaching staff. Chris Carver has been named United States Synchronized Swimming Coach of the Year for an unprecedented 14 years. To celebrate this special historical milestone and recognize the accomplishments by many Aquamaids over the years, SCA will host a historic “look-back” at a half century of accomplishment and international influence in an Academy Awards style presentation on August 30th, 2014 at the Santa Clara University Mayer Theater. The club will be encouraging the gathering of all alumni, including international and national medalists, and this exciting celebration will coincide with the ten year reunion of the Olympic team that took the “bronze” in the Athens Games of 2004, of which seven were Aquamaids. Santa Clara Aquamaids is a non-profit organization funded primarily through a parent-volunteer bingo organization in Santa Clara, which is one of the biggest bingo centers in South Bay Area.
