SATURDAY, 1/17/15 LAW. Genesis 35:5 “The Fear of God!” (By Barry) WORSHIP: This is one of my favorite Chris Tomlin songs (and that is really saying a lot!) I think you will quickly see why I chose it for today! https://youtube/watch?v=YAbkwsTOOgQ SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Gen&c=35&t=NLT#s=35005 Jacob and his family are on their way on a journey. They have made a mess of things, remember? And God has spoken to Jacob, and told him to relocate. So, last week, we saw that Jacob told his sons to get rid of all their idols, and to clean up their act. Now, today, we read these words describing their journey: 5 As they set out, a terror from God spread over the people in all the towns of that area, so no one attacked Jacob’s family. THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. You might remember that a lot of people were made at Jacob and his family. His sons, in anger and revenge, had made some poor choices, and even Jacob knew that his family would now be in danger. When God told Jacob they needed to move, Jacob must have wondered how THAT was going to work out, but he was probably quite relieved to get out of there, too. —2. God had the perfect solution to the problem, didnt He? God caused there to be something different, something special about Jacob and his family. The people in the surrounding towns saw it, and were scared out of their minds. And nobody laid a hand on any member of Jacob’s family! —3. How would you have felt if you were Jacob, or one of his sons? How would you have felt if you lived in one of the surrounding towns? —4. So, how does today’s passage apply to us? In 1 Peter 2:9, it says, You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. So, actually, there should be something clearly different about YOU, too. People shouldn’t be necessarily afraid of you, but but by seeing you, they should sense that something is special, and different. And maybe that should cause them to be AFRAID of not having what YOU have! —5. I sometimes wonder if Christians today don’t have enough FEAR. We seem to have forgotten what it means to serve a holy God. What do you think of that statement? PRAYER:
